The Livonian Lutheran Project
Rev. Dr. John Bombaro
Rev. Dr. Charles Lloyd Cortright
The Livonian Lutheran Project is the working title for our mission to build an online, bachelor's level curriculum of confessional Lutheran theology in partnership with the Riga Luther Academy.
What's in a name?
The Livonian Lutheran Project is named after the historic regional name for modern-day Latvia and Estonia used at the time of the Lutheran Reformation. Luther's reforms were received in Riga in 1522.
Who are we?
We are theologians of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). We are assisting in the construction of an online English-based theology curriculum at the bachelor's level that parallels the accredited Latvian language theology curriculum of the Luther Academy of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia (LELB).
Where are we with the project?
During Spring 2020 our team met with the Luther Academy, Riga leadership to become familiar with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia's (LELB) new curriculum and to discuss plans.
The LELB has received accreditation for its new Bachelor of Theology curriculum which is recognized throughout the European Union.
Our team is helping to create a parallel English version of this curriculum for online use with students who wish to study confessional Lutheran theology, and who are able to function with English as a second language.
The curriculum is a four-year, 40-course program that includes practicums. Rev. Dr. John Bombaro is working currently from the U.S. to populate the English version with English language confessional Lutheran materials.
Rev. Dr. Charles Cortright is in Riga serving as liaison with the LELB and assisting with teaching at the Luther Academy.
The courses for Year 1 of the curriculum are currently under construction. At present, we are hoping to make these first year courses available in fall of 2021.
While this work goes forward, administrative plans are also being made concerning practical matters such as enrollment protocols, costs, and the like.
In the meantime, a free course, Introduction to Theology, is being offered online in fall 2020 for individuals interested in exploring Lutheran theology and the B.Th. program. For information, see the course tab at the top of our Home Page.
